Is Colour Powder Safe for Kids? The Complete Safety Guide for Schools and Daycares

Before booking a venue, choosing a date, or calculating quantities, every school principal, daycare coordinator, and parent committee asks the same question: is colour powder actually safe for children?

It's the right question to ask. And the answer, when you choose Nouwee powder, is yes — with a few straightforward precautions that any organized adult can manage. Here is the complete, honest guide.

What Is Nouwee Colour Powder Made Of?

Nouwee colour powder has two ingredients: cornstarch and food-grade dye. That's it. No synthetic binders, no heavy metals, no chemical compounds. Cornstarch is the same starch used in cooking and baby powder alternatives. Food-grade dye is the same colouring used in candy, beverages, and baked goods.

The powder is 100% biodegradable and compostable. It has no known allergens and no toxic components. It has been used across hundreds of events in Canadian schools, daycares, day camps, and municipalities.

One important detail: Nouwee does not sell red colour powder. Red was the only colour that showed a meaningful risk of staining light fabrics. Every other colour passed our tests. This is not a safety concern, but it's worth knowing when communicating with parents.

What Age Is Appropriate?

Nouwee recommends colour powder activities as follows:

  • Under 3 years: educator applies powder gently using a squeeze bottle. No child handles loose powder directly.
  • 3–7 years: station pass format — child walks through a cloud created by a volunteer. Individual packets not recommended.
  • 8 years and older: individual packets, group throws, and standard color run formats are all appropriate.

The Four Rules for a Safe Colour Powder Event

  • Eyes and nose: powder should always be thrown upward, never directed at faces. Provide coloured protective sunglasses for every participant — they're essential, reusable, and popular as a keepsake.
  • Wind: check the forecast. Light breeze is fine and actually improves cloud effect. Strong wind requires repositioning stations or reducing quantities near the station.
  • Skin and clothing: powder washes off skin with water and soap. Clothing washes out in one cycle at 30–40°C. Ask parents to dress children in white or light-coloured clothes they don't mind colouring.
  • Rinse station: set up a hose or water basin at the end. A 5-minute rinse removes the bulk of powder from hair and skin before children head home.

What to Tell Parents — A Communication Template

Sending a clear parent notice 5–7 days before the event prevents questions and builds confidence. Here is a template you can adapt:

"On [date], we are organizing a colour run for [grade/group]. We will be using Nouwee colour powder, which is made from cornstarch and food-grade dye. It is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and biodegradable. Please dress your child in white or light-coloured clothing they don't mind colouring. Powder washes out in a regular wash cycle. Protective glasses will be provided. Questions? Contact [name] at [email]."

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a child with asthma participate? Colour powder is not a respiratory irritant in the quantities used at organized events. Children with severe respiratory conditions should be positioned at the edge of throw zones. Consult the child's parent and, if needed, their physician.

What if a child gets powder in their eyes? Rinse with water immediately. Nouwee powder causes no lasting irritation — the food-grade dye is not caustic. Protective glasses prevent this in the vast majority of cases.

Does it stain skin permanently? No. Water and soap remove it. Some lighter skin tones may retain a faint tint for 24–48 hours in skin creases — this is normal and temporary.
